KUCHING: Hock Seng Lee (HSL) today announced two fitness events, a fun run in Dec, and what will be Samarahan’s first ever full marathon in May 2024.
ELITE: Among participants at the 2024 HSL Samarahan Marathon will be Sally Yap, who is one of the leading female ultra trail marathoner in Malaysia, and members of the notable Haolian Group.
The School Holiday Night Run will be on Dec 16, the first Saturday of the school holidays, while the HSL Samarahan Marathon will be on May 11-12, 2024.
Super early bird registration fees for both are available at events.lapromenademall.com.my. Those signing up for bundle deals will enjoy cheapest prices. All tickets are on a first come, first served basis.
The School Holiday Night Run, which includes plenty of runner entitlements and merchandise, is limited to 700 participants.
This fun run has two categories, 3km and 6km, and will be held within the beautifully lit up Christmas decorations of La Promenade.
The 2024 HSL Samarahan Marathon will be a milestone for La Promenade Mall. “We are proud and excited to organise the first marathon in beautiful Samarahan. We want to grow the event year by year. We want to do something new for the community and hope the community supports us,” said corporate communication manager Jennifer Tang.
Tang added fees are the lowest for any running event in Sarawak partly because HSL is subsidising. “HSLconsiders events such as this a unique way to give back. I think post-Pandemic, we all aim to be healthier.”
Categories will range from 3km to 42km, with the shorter race categories on May 11 evening, and the marathon, half marathon and 10km predawn on May 12.
Ten kilometres, half and full marathons will come with timing chips.
Prizes for the 2024 event is over RM50,000 combined, for men, women, and veteran categories. Uniquely, there will be top 15 prizes in most competitive categories, ensuring more people are winners.
Notable marathoner Anthony Lee is the race director.
“Samarahan is perfect for both amateur and professional marathoners,” Lee said. “The route is the flattest and smoothest. Our race course has low elevation and avoids sharp u-turns.
“To amateurs wanting to challenge themselves with a longer distance, try it at Samarahan. To professionals, get your ‘personal best’ at Samarahan.”
Malaysia’s leading female ultra trail marathoner Sally Yap, who is a HSL sponsored athlete, is the events’ spokesperson.
“I encourage everyone to join a marathon at least once in their lives. Running as part of a community event is a very special thing. Not only are you challenging yourself, but you also feel a strong sense of bonding with everyone you see around you.
“I often say, marathon events are good for both physical and mental well-being,” Yap said.
Super early bird fees are RM40 for the School Holiday Night Run, and RM90 for the full marathon.
