HSL set on developing master-planned project near Kuching International Airport - AIR

Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) and Hock Seng Lee (HSL) today unveiled the results of the AIR Architecture Competition. MOA Architects, headed by Kuala Lumpur-based Sarawakian Ar Hung Ing Sing, clinched first prize.

Premier representative, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, officiated the AIR Prize Giving Ceremony.

HSL has pledged to build one of the winning schemes, echoing its commitment after the Langit competition in 2021, and its earth-breaking as Langit Citadines Kuching in 2025.

Here are the media highlights:

In a press conference after the AIR Architecture Competition prize-giving ceremony held at the HSL Tower on Wednesday, Neat Plan (a property division of HSL) director Yu Ji said the developer hopes to begin groundbreaking of the master plan in three years.

“Similar to our Citadines Langit Kuching mixed-use development, we will kickstart the interview process with all the shortlisted architects to deliberate on matters regarding engineering, business feasibility and more. This will take about six to nine months. Getting the necessary government approvals could take another two years,” said Yu.

Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) and Hock Seng Lee (HSL) earlier yesterday unveiled the results of the AIR Architecture Competition, a design competition that seeks masterplans primarily focused on residential development on a 13.5-acre space between Kuching International Airport and Saradise, while thoughtfully integrating a natural stream in the land.

MOA Architects Sdn Bhd, led by Kuala Lumpur-based Sarawakian director Ar Hung Sing Ing, has emerged as the first prize winner of the AIR Architecture Competition with a visionary masterplan featuring what could become Malaysia’s largest green roof.

Abang Johari also noted the Project AIR tagline, ‘The AIR Above Us, Dibawah AIR Mengalir’, as a simple phrase which distils Sarawak’s long tradition of living in harmony with nature - from longhouses upriver to the shophouses of the Nanyang style that line old Kuching.

“Great cities grow from great rivers, whether in Kuala Lumpur or here at Kuching,” he added.

The Premier said this is to ensure that the built environment keeps pace with the state’s ambitions.

“Architecture sits at the heart of that agenda. We seek buildings and neighbourhoods that nurture biodiversity, embrace smart technology and, above all, put people first,” he said in a speech for the AIR Architecture Competition prize presentation at Hock Seng Lee (HSL) Tower here today.

The Premier highlighted a recurring theme in the entries: the river as a vital, living corridor rather than a obstacle, echoing Sarawak’s historic ties to its waterways.

He also welcomed HSL’s intention to re-engage all winning and commended teams, noting that Langit’s final built design came from a third-placed scheme. ‘That openness to talent is commendable. When we build well, we create not juts buildings, but better communities – and the real winners will be the people who live in them.’
