HSL organised an architecture talk, “Talks on Architecture: More Than Aesthetics” featuring PAM Gold Award winner, Ar Wee Hii Min, and PAM’s 40 Under 40: Top Malaysian Emerging Architects, Choong Wei Li last Saturday.
Wee heads the prestigious MWAA, which has projects across Malaysia, from Kuching to Penang.
Choong is widely considered one of Malaysia’s rising stars. A Sarawakian, who founded Futurground Architects in Kuala Lumpur, Choong’s bungalow designs have been recognised by the international media, including Arch Daily.
Both architects will speak on contemporary architecture in the local context, their favourite buildings in Kuching, and the do’s and don’ts of home renovations.

Here are the media highlights:

On that note, Wee encouraged more architects, especially those from Sarawak, to travel and learn from architectural practices around the world. At the same time, he urged them to return and contribute meaningfully to the local community.
Kuching-born and Miri-raised, Choong, who ranks among PAM's 40 Under 40: Top Malaysian Emerging Architects, emphasised how light, wind and water should guide modern design while keeping the state's tropical climate in mind.
"We should look back on our ancestors, who actually built their houses in response to the climate and the weather," said Choong, who is also a founder of Futurground Architects in Kuala Lumpur.

“Some clients feel that if it doesn’t look bright and shiny, then it isn’t design. But it’s not about what you see. It’s about what you feel and experience when you are in that space,” he said during ‘Talks on Architecture: More Than Aesthetics’ session organised by HSL at La Promenade Mall.

Many Malaysians still view big, European-style façades as symbols of wealth, often installing air-conditioners in every room to keep them habitable.
“Only later do they realise the cost and discomfort. After the COVID-19 pandemic especially, people now value open spaces and connection to nature,” said architect, Choong Wei Li.
