Cactus and Succulent Show at La Promenade

Competition With Prizes Totalling RM5,000 And Sales Booths For Lease

KUCHING: Hock Seng Lee (HSL) is organising a Cactus & Succulent Show at La Promenade Mall on April 15-30, including a competition with cash prizes totalling RM5,000.

The mall is inviting members of the public to enter the contest, and to sign up for booths for lease.

A 3,000 sqft space on the mall’s ground floor is being converted to host the show.

“Succulents are really popular now. They’ve been popular in Kuching for a while already, but over the past one year — due to people spending more time at home — it’s become the ‘in thing’ to grow,” said HSL landscape department head Leslie Lim.

“Even in the office, my colleagues are decorating spaces with their own succulents. This is a really a great time to host a competition,” he added.

Entry to the competition is free. Each participant can enter five plants. “We’re thinking of capping it at 50 entries. But we’ll see. As long as we have display space, we’ll take in entries,” said Lim, who is one of three judges.

The entries will be on public display for two weeks.

Landscaping is a key highlight at La Promenade, a 200-acre mixed development along the busy Kuching-Samarahan Expressway.

In 2018, La Promenade won at the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards in the “Masterplanning” category. The awards were held in conjunction with the World Landscape Architecture Month in Kuala Lumpur.

La Promenade remains the only mixed development in Sarawak to have won the prestigious honour, alongside national developers like SP Setia, Gamuda Land and UEM Sunrise.

The HSL development was praised for building a “township within a park” with emphasis on pedestrian traffic.

“Come for the Succulent and Cactus Show at La Promenade, stay for the bonsai and Norfolk pine trees we have planted all around,” said Lim.
